      <image:title>Who we are</image:title>
<image:caption>AiRM was founded in 2003. The organisation has delivered a varied programme of exhibitions centred on 8 medieval churches located on Denge and Walland marsh. Art in Romney Marsh continues to support artists to experiment and make site-specific work. Since 2011, AiRM has delivered a wide range of learning programmes that engage community groups with their local heritage and history. Creative, partnership and educational opportunities are organised by Susan Churchill Director/curator Our organisation is LGBQT+ led and continues to actively support diversity and inclusivity. We want to support the members of our communities who would otherwise be excluded or marginalised based on the grounds of gender, race, class, sexuality, disability to take part in our events and exhibitions. We are confident that we provide equal access to opportunities and resources where people across all identities can feel valued, welcomed, respected, included, represented, and safe. That they can be their authentic self, can contribute and have a voice. With Thanks Heritage Lottery Fund Roger De Haan Charitable Trust Arts Council England</image:caption>

<image:caption>Rachel Irons (b.1994) for the Art in Romney Marsh commission, Rachel will explore, unsound, listening and auditory phenomena around the environment of Romney Marsh. The project is taking cues from the sound mirrors at Romney Marsh, early listening disk technology developed to listen out for planes coming over the channel. Irons project will be exploring the space between theory and fiction and speculation. Working with reverberation not as dissipating, but collecting and carrying particles of the past, audio haunting and collection of memories.</image:caption>

      <image:title>St George's Ivychurch - Katrin Albrecht</image:title>
<image:caption>Katrin Albrecht b. in South Germany 1977. Lives and works in Folkestone with her family. For this commission, Katrin will develop her exploration of the symbolism of flags, looking at military fabrics and from cut offs. For the AiRM commission Katrin is looking at the churches’ important role in smuggling activities and will produce a big flag that merges the sacred with the profane. Religious shapes and colours will mingle with forms representing goods that historically have been smuggled on the Marshes. The flag will be referencing the church window’s shape but turned upside down as storing smuggled goods in churches is like turning sacred space upside down. The colours and patterns will hint at the original and now lost stained glass windows.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“In 2012 Barker was exploring the process of re-interpreting her old faded childhood photographs as linear graphite drawings onto cloth, which was then washed, partially stitched and painted. ‘In this body of work I reference my Northern roots, filtering my findings to narrate a voyage through the lost historical cultural coordinates, The Girls Friendly Society, Walking Day, the Sunday School day trip, the Church School. By utilizing familiar old group photographs and leaving them faceless, I play on our need to be represented, to be there.’ Curator David Rhodes”</image:caption>

The large crinoline-cage explores themes of sexuality, gender, desire and repression within traditional Victorian society, whilst the sound represents a contemporary, modern-day view of a collective of women unified by common interests and passions”</image:caption>

      <image:title>AiRM 2019 - Katrin Albrecht</image:title>
<image:caption>Born in South Germany 1977. Lives and works in Folkestone with her family. For this commission, Katrin developed her exploration of the symbolism of flags, looking at military fabrics and cut offs. Katrin considered the churches’ important role in smuggling activities and produced a big flag that merged the sacred with the profane. Religious shapes and colours mingled with forms representing goods that historically have been smuggled on the Marshes. The flag referenced the church window’s shape but turned upside down, storing smuggled goods in churches is like turning sacred space upside down. The colours and patterns hint at the original and now lost stained glass windows.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Kaori Homma (b.1962) and Sanae Yamada ( b. 1987) worked collaboratively on the Art in Romney Marsh commission. Uncovering the narratives which are hidden under the beauty of the landscape in Dungeness and explore nuanced depths that go beyond the romanticised notion of wilderness of Romney Marsh.</image:caption>

      <image:title>AiRM 2019 - Rachel Irons</image:title>
<image:caption>Rachel Irons (b.1994) explored unsound, listening and auditory phenomena around the environment of Romney Marsh. Taking cues from the sound mirrors at Romney Marsh, early listening disk technology developed to listen out for planes coming over the channel. Irons project explored the space between theory and fiction and speculation. Working with reverberation not as dissipating, but collecting and carrying particles of the past, audio haunting and collection of memories.</image:caption>

<image:caption>St Mary’s church is immediately associated with Edith Nesbit who is buried here. There is the original memorial to her, made by her husband, inside the church and a wooden replica in the churchyard. E Nesbit is best known for writing The Railway Children but actually supported herself and her family through her work, publishing over 60 books. Edith developed a new approach to children’s writing, combining fantasy with realism, much admired by JK Rowling. Edith was also a political activist and co-founded the Fabian Society. The Edith Nesbit Society celebrate Edith’s birthday every year at this church.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Originally on an island in the River Rother, ancient Old Romney was a busy port. St Clement’s church, constructed in the 12th century, boasts a crusader tomb, Georgian minstrels' gallery and pink box pews. The pink colour was introduced during the filming of the 1962 Disney film The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh based on the Dr Syn series written by Russell Thorndike. The filmmaker Derek Jarman’s grave is situated in the churchyard.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Cathedral of the Marsh, St George’s church in Ivychurch, dates to the twelfth century. The nave was cleared of it’s box pews in early 19th C and offers visitors a great opportunity to look up at the roof structure and the newly restored medieval window. There is a museum of agricultural life in the North Aisle. The flag stones are a reminder of how churches in rural England would regularly be used to store livestock.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Peg looms are a simple and fun way of getting started with weaving. This type of weaving can be traced back to people of the Great Lakes region of North America in the 1500s when French trappers first encountered them. In the 18th century it was taught to children to develop their manual dexterity before they entered the weaving trade.</image:caption>

<image:title>St Mary in the Marsh 2022 - St Mary the Virgin’s Church, St Mary in the Marsh</image:title>
<image:caption>The church at St Mary’s is immediately associated with Edith Nesbit who is buried here. There is the original memorial to her, made by her husband, inside the church and a wooden replica of the memorial in the churchyard. E Nesbit is best known for writing The Railway Children but actually supported herself and her family through her work, she produced over 60 books. Edith developed a new approach to children’s writing by combining fantasy with realism, a style much admired by JK Rowling. Edith was also a political activist and co-founded the Fabian Society. The Edith Nesbit Society celebrate Edith’s birthday every year at this church. St Mary the Virgin’s Church hosts one of our Lookers Huts, which is clearly visible from the road. There are no facilities at the church, but Romney Marsh Visitor Centre has disabled toilet TN28 8AY. Opposite the church you will find The Star Inn The Marsh pub, up to date information and contact details can be found on their website.</image:caption>

      <image:title>St George's Ivychurch 2022 - St George’s Church, Ivychurch</image:title>
<image:caption>There is evidence that St George’s church dates to the twelfth century. It is called the cathedral of the marsh (on Romney Marsh) because of its impressive size. The nave was cleared of it’s box pews in early 19th C, and offers visitors a great opportunity to look at the roof structure and the newly restored medieval window. The North Aisle contains a museum style collection of agricultural equipment and its flag stones are a reminder of how churches in rural England would regularly be used to store livestock. There are disabled accessible toilet facilities. Next to St George’s church is The Bell, a friendly and accessible pub.</image:caption>

The filmmaker Derek Jarman’s grave is situated in the churchyard. There are no toilet facilities at this church, but there are plenty of shops and cafe’s in nearby New Romney.</image:caption>

      <image:title>St Augustine Brookland 2022 - St Augustine, Brookland</image:title>
<image:caption>St Augustine is famous for its detached wooden bell tower that stands in front of the church. The tower was built in the second half of the 13th century as an open structure and was doubled in height to its present 18m (60ft) and clad with shingles in the 15th century. The fine interior of this 13th century church contains the highest box pews on the Marsh and a double decker-pulpit complete with sounding board. A medieval wall painting of the murder of Archbishop Thomas Becket survives in the southeast chapel, and a Norman lead font is still in use in the nave. There are toilet facilities at this church. Woolpack Inn is located a short drive away.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Thomas à Becket, Fairfield 2022 - Thomas à Becket, Fairfield</image:title>
<image:caption>St Thomas Becket is the most iconic of all the churches on Romney Marsh. The tiny building dates back to the late 12th century sits isolated in a field cut through with dykes and grazed by sheep; the houses of the original medieval inhabitants of Fairfield have long since disappeared. Constructed with a wooden frame and walls of wattle and daub, the church was restored in the 18th century when the walls were replaced with bricks. Inside the church is a pristine 18th century interior with a white-painted triple-decker pulpit, box pews, and oval text boards. There are no facilities at the church, and access is a short walk across a field.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Carbon Zero Pathway - Bumblebee Conservation Trust</image:title>
<image:caption>Short-haired bumblebee reintroduction project. Short-haired bumblebee (Bombus subterraneus) is native to the UK and was once widespread across the south of England, occurring as far north as Humberside. Post-1950s its population distribution became isolated and patchy. Its decline was almost certainly the result of the loss of the species-rich grassland habitats on which it depends. It was last recorded near Dungeness in 1988 and was declared extinct in 2000. The Short-haired bumblebee reintroduction project aimed to reintroduce this lost species to the UK, raise awareness of bumblebee and flower meadow declines, increase resident rare bumblebee populations, and recreate and give advice on managing and maintaining flower-rich areas. The project ran from 2009 to 2022 and worked with farmers, conservation groups, smallholders and other landowners to create flower-rich habitat within the release area of Dungeness and Romney Marsh in Kent and East Sussex.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Oscar Wilde portrait 2025 Have you ever stood in a gallery and wondered about the lives behind the portraits — beyond the fine clothes and composed expressions? I’m drawn to those untold stories and the human threads that connect us across time. By painting paper party hats onto historical figures, I gently disrupt traditional portraiture. The hats act as playful crowns — celebrating and honouring queer people of the past whose identities were often hidden or erased. My work balances reverence and irreverence, using humour and colour to acknowledge queer presence in history while imagining more joyful and hopeful futures.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Queeriosities Collective - Dolly</image:title>
<image:caption>Quince screen print Dec 2025 Dolly Demoratti is a contemporary artist whose multidisciplinary practice spans screen printing, painting, and photography. Working predominantly at large scale, she constructs layered images that play with illusion, materiality, and expectation. Originally trained within the professional print world in London, including formative years at Pictures on Walls, she later established the Berlin-based studio Mother Drucker. Over fifteen years, this environment became both a site of production and technical mastery, grounding her work in a rigorous understanding of screen printing as both craft and language. Now focused on her own artistic practice, her work examines the quiet dissonance between surface and subtext. Seemingly calm or familiar scenes carry embedded references to mental health, addiction, and gender identity, deliberately resisting direct narration. Ambiguity is central to the work, allowing meaning to emerge slowly and reflect the complexity of lived experience.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I am currently exploring portraiture building on a research project that looks at Queer heritage and how important it is to find queer lives represented in public collections. Ive discovered there are many gaps and so Im on a mission to make portrait paintings based on historic photographs and drawings.. I have embarked on a series of portrait studies to identify how we perceive queerness and the importance of reengaging with portraiture and claiming queer creatives from the recent past. I am inspired by the need to identify Queer Heritage and to make new visual references and to celebrate important queer creatives from 1920/1930’s. I am motivated to celebrate important people such as Virginia Woolf, Gluck and to make paintings that reflect their significant cultural contributions. I am inspired by the queer creative community who lived and worked in and around Rye. I continue to develop my paintings as part of a queer heritage journey that brings me a great deal of joy and positivity. Violet oil on canvas</image:caption>
