AiRM2013 provided the opportunity to make thirteen new commissions for South East Creatives to respond to six selected medieval church sites. Each artist was invited to select the site and write their proposal as a direct response to historical, architectural features. In addition, AiRM had the exciting opportunity to recontextualise the brilliant sculpture Ghost by Adam Chodzko in the central nave at St George’s church Ivychurch.

“Ghost is a kayak, a sculpture as vessel, coffin, bed, costume and camera rig. It is designed to ferry people to the island of the dead”

The hand-built kayak made from a combination of carefully sourced timber: Alaskan yellow cedar, western red cedar, Fijiian mahogany, oak, ash, walnut, is a large scale work that is more than human size to offer enough space to accommodate a person but also their worldly goods suitable for the afterlife. This work exhibited in a church created the dialogue between past and present, death and life giving our audiences time for contemplation and reflection

2013 artists were Joan Alexander, Hermione Allsopp, Mary Butcher, Adam Chodzko, Geoff Coupland, Laura Grain, Lorna Hamilton-Brown, David Jackson, Alastair Knights, Abigail Luthmann, Tim Meacham, Nicole Mollett, Susan Ormerod, Ellen Southern, Clare Whistler.
